The Benefits Of Saunas Are Numerous
Interested in the benefits of saunas or are you ready to buy a sauna now? Many buy an infrared sauna and are very happy that they did. I know I am. I own the Smarty model and couldn't be happier with its Japanese quality. Never had one hitch with its use.
Get the Most Detoxification Possible With Dry Skin Brushing Before Sauna Usage
You want your pores to be free and clear to start with. So go to your local health food store or find online a simple dry skin brush. Gently but firmly rotate around each section of your body (except your face). It's best to do this just before entering your sauna and in your bathtub as dead skin cells will fall off. Dry skin brushing has been known to augment weight and cellulite reduction and stimulates your immune system (plus lots of other benefits that revolve around enhanced circulation.
Do not place any type of lotion on your skin when entering your sauna. Even oily or heavily perfumed commercial soaps should not be used as these will only add to the burden of your skin's pores and slow the free flow of perspiration.
If you have had trouble perspiring in the past, it means an imbalance in the body. Your FAR infrared sauna will help this. But if you wish for perhaps more of a diaphoretic effect, try some yarrow herb tea as this is very stimulating and will enhance your flow of perspiration.
As a side note, lymph congestion is usually the culprit in lack of perspiration. Your sauna will also help this along. But a fantastic exercise that is non-jarring and specific for lymph toxicity is the rebounder (mini trampoline). You'll find life-time warranty trampolines here: ReboundAir Rebounders.
While FAR infrared sauna therapy has proven itself to be health restoring in a variety of situations, take note of these contraindications for the record:
• If you are using prescription drugs, check with your physician or pharmacist for any possible change in the drug's effect due to any interaction with infrared energy. • It is considered inadvisable to raise the core temperature in someone with adrenal suppression and systemic lupus erythematosus or multiple sclerosis, by some authorities. • If you have a recent acute joint injury, it should not be heated for the first 48 hours after an injury or until the hot and swollen symptoms subside. If you have a joint or joints that are chronically hot and swollen, these joints may respond poorly to vigorous heating of any kind. Vigorous heating is strictly contraindicated in cases of enclosed infections be they dental, in joints or in any other tissues. • If you are pregnant, or suspect you may be, discontinue your sauna use and consult your doctor. Finnish women use their saunas, which don't throw heat as deeply into the body, for only 6-12 minutes and reportedly leave at that time, due to perceived discomfort. Their usage at this low level of intensity is NOT linked to birth defects. Infrared sauna usage may be 2-3 times more intense, and comparatively shorter 2-6 minute sessions hardly seem worth any minimal risk they may present. • Metal pins, rods, artificial joints or any other surgical implants generally reflect infrared rays and thus are NOT heated by this system, nevertheless you should consult your surgeon prior to using your sauna. Certainly it must be discontinued if you experience pain near any such implants. Silicone does not absorb infrared energy. Implanted silicone or silicone prostheses for nose or ear replacement may be warmed by the infrared rays. Since silicone melts at over 392 F, it should not be adversely affected by the usage of FAR infrared saunas. It is still advised that you check with your surgeon and possibly a representative form the product manufacturer to be certain. • Heating of the lower back area of women during menstruation may temporarily increase their flow. Once a women is aware that this may occur, she can choose to allow herself to possibly experience this short term effect without worry or to simply avoid her sauna during that time of her cycle. • Hemophiliacs and anyone predisposed to hemorrhage should avoid infrared sauna usage or any type of heating that would induce vasodilation, which can potentate the tendency to bleed. • Obviously, should any condition worsen with the use of your sauna, the use of the system should be discontinued. • People do not experience pain using their infrared sauna sessions unless such is contraindicated. If you do, the use of radiant (FAR infrared) heat is clearly inappropriate for you at that time. • DO NOT attempt to self-treat any disease with your sauna without direct supervision of your physician.
What About Supplementation?
When toxins pour out of your body in the form of sweat, some of your good nutrients can also be lost especially a form of mineral called an electrolyte. That's why it's important to raise your water intake to perhaps one gallon per day and supplement with quality minerals and other vital nutrients. Trace minerals strengthen the cell walls and promote healthy blood. They also promote proper contraction and relaxation of muscles such as the heart.
Please don't downplay supplementation with sauna usage. Here's why: when electrolytes are depleted from the body it can result in muscle spasms, migraines, seizures, weakness, depression, exhaustion, cardiac arrhythmia like atrial fibrillation or ventricular tachycardia, stroke or heart attack. So if you find yourself feeling very weak, it may mean to take MORE minerals.
By providing your bloodstream with molecular oxygen it is possible to kill anaerobic bacteria and other parasites on contact, without harming your tissue or friendly aerobic bacteria. When extra oxygen is released into your blood stream, though minimal when compared to the amount of oxygen you breathe into your lungs, it is very beneficial to your metabolism.
If your body can maintain a robust cellular oxidation, meaning that virtually every cell in your body is functioning well, disease and bacteria are killed. When cell oxidation is diminished due to stress, pollution and junk foods, the body is opened up to degeneration, fatigue and sickness.
Before your sauna session:
1. Make sure you are well hydrated by drinking 2-3 glasses of purified water, more if your sauna session is one hour. 2. Supplement with a replenishing combination of amino acids, enzymes and minerals. 3. Supplement with the anti-stress mineral magnesium which aids in relaxing nerves, relieving tension, assists digestion, activates enzymes important for protein and carbohydrate metabolism, modulates the electrical potential across all cell membranes and is vital for correcting the fluid and mineral losses that accompany loss of stored chemicals. We like this formula made with kinetically energized minerals which maximize each mineral's compatibility with the cells of your body: Magnesium Spray. The last thing you need is to consume minerals that your body doesn't "recognize" as they can become toxic once inside your system and are stored over time in the soft tissues of vital organs.
If you have symptoms of magnesium deficiency such as muscle cramps or atrial fibrillation, take extra as a safeguard.
During your sauna session:
1. If you've purchased a cabin sauna where you can sit or lean back, try listening to relaxing music or educational audiotapes. 2. Take inside at least two clean towels to mop off perspiration from your body or in the case of the horizontal saunas, to lie upon. 3. More water to drink if you've purchased a cabin sauna where you can sit or lean back After your sauna session: 1. Make sure you are well hydrated by drinking 2-3 glasses of purified water. More if you detect that you perspired profusely. 2. Supplement with a replenishing combination of 84 trace minerals. I like Trace Mineral Formula spray formula. 3. Supplement with a quality magnesium formula like Magnesium Spray found here 4. Perhaps supplement with concentrated green tea extracts and blueberry/pomegranate extracts for lots of antioxidant power. 5. Do NOT quickly cool your body with extreme temperatures by going outside or taking a cold bath or shower immediately following your sauna session. Get dressed relatively quickly if you're not showering afterwards to avoid becoming chilled. If you are taking a shower or bath afterwards, wait at least 15 minutes so you body can acclimate to the changed temperature.
Daily Supplementation:
1. Either in the morning or evening at least once per day make sure you are receiving nutrients designed to detoxify and repair cleansed tissues. The three formulas above can be taken more often than once a day and a multiple vitamin/mineral whole-food formula is also advisable. We like Vitalerbs and Jurassic Green Wheatgrass for a wide spectrum of nutrients including Vitamin C, glutathione, amino acids and much more. If cleansing of other organs of elimination is indicated please check our resource page for some superior choices. 2. Of course, make sure you are ingesting at least 2 quarts of purified water a day, more if using the sauna on a regular basis. 3. Don't forget adding essential fatty acids like Udo's Choice for a combination of Omega 3, 6 and 9.
It goes without saying that eating a more healthy diet is always in order. Try cutting back on your intake of processed foods. Eat plenty of raw fruits and veggies, raw seeds and nuts. Maybe more whole grains and less of meat which takes longer to digest. Among the top ten super foods of all time are beans, sprouts (especially broccoli sprouts), berries such as blueberries and raspberries, raw nuts, buckwheat, garlic and onions (raw is best), granular lecithin and plain yogurt with probiotics intact.
After You Buy Infrared Sauna - How do You Clean It?
Remember that you will be lying (or sitting, depending on your sauna) upon 2 to 3 bath towels for perspiration absorption so there isn't much clean up involved. However, if sharing your unit with the public, it's only courteous (and mandatory in most states) to properly sanitize your sauna.
In some salons and medical environments, cleaners such as bleaches and caustic degreasing agents often include more toxic chemicals to deal with. If that is the law in your state you must abide by it. However, if you have a choice in the matter, and especially if you are sanitizing your home unit, I like to use 4 parts water to 1 part raw apple cider vinegar. This solution is very cleansing and disinfecting. You could even add a few drops of quality tea tree oil or thyme oil for more disinfecting effect. Let air dry for at least 10 minutes and you're done. Apples and apple cider vinegar (when raw and preferably organic) contain lots of oxygen which inhibits bacterial growth. Besides, far infrared heat (or radiation) is disinfecting by nature, as an added benefit.
